The major event of the 3rd Ukrainian Cross-Section Triennial of Contemporary Ukrainian Art will be the reCREATION exhibition. It is complement by the [De][Re]construction project on the history of Ukrainian new media art. Besides, the Triennial will be accompanied by the performance art programme.
According to project’s curators, the Ukrainian Cross-Section reCREATION exhibition reflects the current situation in Ukrainian art, in the country that is nowadays in crisis. The exhibition makes an effort to show Ukrainian art to be in the face of war and changes.
The first Ukrainian Cross-Section Triennial (2010) was held in the Polish city of Lublin, and it was an attempt of self-identification, the search for identity of Ukrainian contemporary art. The Ukrainian Cross-Section ‘2013 was importantas a process of introspection and self-esteem.
The current reCREATION process, its components, parts, fragments, which in previous times were the result of “sectioning”, now they became the result of “explosion”. That explosion is radicalizing and catalyzing the research of transformations in contemporary art of Ukraine. The Ukrainian Cross-Section reCREATION exhibition focuses on problems that can be defined by means of such concepts as: uncertainty, weakness, anxiety, migration, identity, change, negotiations, dialogue, compromise, aberration, paradox, trauma, hate, ugliness and death.

The curatorial [De][Re]construction project creates a historical narrative of Ukrainian new media art, stating from the early years of independence and to contemporary works by young Ukrainian media artists. The project is based on chronological infrastructure, and it presents strategies of different agents in the history of Ukrainian media art 1991-2015. It reflects three parts, from the first experiments by painters with new media art in the early 1990s, the birth of digital art in 1997 and its disappearance from the horizon of artistic practices. Besides, we’ll present the period of the early 2000s, when digital tools became customary for artists. Among the narratives and strategies we are going to demonstrate art works and artists involved in the issues of identity, documents, archives, simulacrum, irony and others.
The [De][Re]construction project is an attempt to find out those relationships and interdependence, it’s also an attempt to create a map of Ukrainian new media art.
