The film is in tribute to Vagrich Bakhchanyan – painter, poet and conceptualist. Andrei Zagdansky, the film director, combines documentary with animation, performances and art installations. Those cinematic experiments are an allegory of Bakhchanyan himself, a known surrealist and avant-garde artist.

The feature documentary is about Vagrich Bakhchanyan, born in 1938 in the city of Kharkiv. Painter, artist and writer-conceptualist of Armenian origin. He possessed a keen sensitivity to the absurdities of the Soviet regime. One of the most brilliant artists-emigrants to the U.S. ‘Funny, poignant, smart, sometimes metaphysical’. The film uses artist’s pictures, aphorisms and collages, demonstrating his surreal world. And there is one mystery in this world, the mystery of the black square. The film applies Bahchanyan’s friends and relatives comic and sad stories from his life. The life of a Soviet artist with non-Soviet soul. The conceptualist, who was one of the first representatives of Kharkiv constructivism and avant-garde art; the free man who, despite the possibility of adaptation in exile, remained true to himself.
